Do not assume that an image downloaded from Instagram has the same EXIF data as the original upload. Services can resize, recompress, or otherwise process images, and the copy a person can download may differ from the file sent by a photographer.
The exact result can vary with app versions, account features, upload paths, and how a copy is obtained. A displayed post also does not expose every field that was present in the uploaded file. Instagram’s visible location tag or caption is separate from GPS EXIF embedded in an image file.
Check the copy you have
Download or save the specific version you want to inspect, then open it in an EXIF viewer. Compare its fields with the original file if you have access to one. The camera, date, or GPS fields may be absent or changed in the copy.
Do not use missing metadata to infer that a photo is AI-generated. A social upload is one of many ordinary ways camera metadata can be lost. For location-sensitive images, check GPS presence before sharing and remove it if the location should stay private.
Read what photo metadata can reveal for a field-by-field overview.
